Lady Eagles Close Historic Season at UIL 5A State Tournament
May 15-16, 2023
White Wing Golf Club at Sun City – Georgetown, Texas
The Argyle Lady Eagles bring a historic season to its final stage at the UIL 5A State Tournament, finishing tied for seventh in Georgetown and capping a year that permanently raises the standard for the program.
In their inaugural season competing in Class 5A, the Lady Eagles do more than simply reach the state tournament. They prove they belong there.
Facing one of the deepest fields in Texas high school golf at White Wing Golf Club at Sun City, Argyle posts two steady rounds and finishes tied for seventh against the best teams in the state. Alamo Heights claims the team championship, with Montgomery finishing second and Lake Creek taking third, but the Lady Eagles hold their own on one of the biggest stages of the season.
The setting matches the moment.
Central Texas delivers beautiful conditions for most of the tournament, interrupted only by a brief afternoon shower on day one that delays the final groups on the course. Through it all, Argyle stays composed and competes with the same resilience that carries the team all season long.
Senior Madison Wert leads the way and closes her Argyle career with another standout performance.
Wert fires back-to-back rounds of 75 to finish ninth individually with a 36-hole total of 150, earning a top-10 finish against the strongest competition in Class 5A. The result is another fitting chapter in one of the best individual seasons in program history. She finishes her senior year with a 75.58 scoring average, setting a new school record and cementing her place among the top players ever to wear an Argyle uniform.
Behind her, the rest of the lineup continues to battle.
Kate Rendon opens with a strong 78 in round one, while Ryan Purczynski adds an 83. Ana Edwards contributes a 94, and Colbie Moses rounds out the day with a 104 as the Lady Eagles post a first-round team score of 330. That total places Argyle in eighth after the opening round, keeping the team in position heading into the final day.
In round two, the Lady Eagles make one more push.
Argyle shoots a 332 and catches Frisco Wakeland to move into a tie for seventh place in the final standings. Rendon returns with an 82, Purczynski adds an 85, Edwards improves to a 90, and Moses closes with a 98. It is another balanced team effort, the kind that defines Argyle throughout the year and helps the Lady Eagles finish their state tournament on a strong note.
The result matters on its own. But the bigger story is the season it completes.
Argyle closes the year with seven tournament victories, including district and regional championships, and finishes with an outstanding 93-22 overall record. For a team making its first run through Class 5A, that kind of season says everything about the talent, depth, and competitive standard inside the program.
A state tournament appearance always means something.
But to do it in the program’s first year in a new classification, to win along the way, and to finish the season among the top teams in Texas makes this group especially memorable. The Lady Eagles do not simply adjust to 5A. They announce themselves in it.
By the time the final putts drop in Georgetown, the season already feels like one that will be remembered for a long time — a year of championships, a year of milestones, and a year that proves Argyle girls golf is ready for the biggest stage.
COMPETE WITH JOY
