Lady Eagles Capture 5A Region I Championship at The Rawls Course
April 17-18, 2023
The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University – Lubbock, Texas
The Argyle Lady Eagles take another major step in a historic season, winning the 5A Region I Championship in Lubbock and earning a trip to the UIL State Tournament.
At The Rawls Course at Texas Tech University, two teams and two medalists from districts across North and West Texas come together for one of the toughest regional tests in the state. Argyle answers with the kind of two-day performance championship teams are built on, posting rounds of 321 and 320 for a 36-hole total of 641 to claim the regional title.
The opening round begins with a spotlight pairing.
Argyle, Aledo, Amarillo, and Lubbock Cooper — four of the top-ranked teams in the field — lead the tournament off the first tee. Conditions are far from easy. The morning starts with temperatures in the 40s, and as the day wears on, the wind rises, the temperature climbs, and dust begins to move across the course. It is a true West Texas test, and the Lady Eagles handle it well.
Ana Edwards opens the lineup with a 92. Freshman Colbie Moses follows with an 89, and junior Kate Rendon delivers one of the biggest rounds of the day, shooting a career-best 80. Ryan Purczynski adds a 77, and senior Madison Wert anchors the lineup with a 75. By the end of round one, Argyle’s 321 gives the Lady Eagles a one-shot lead heading into the final day.
Then comes the finish.
Day two brings a completely different look, with light wind and temperatures rising from the mid-60s into the 80s. On a calmer day with a regional title on the line, Argyle stays composed and delivers again. Wert once more leads the way with another 75, while Purczynski follows with a 78. Rendon adds an 82, Moses improves to an 85, and Edwards closes with an 87 as the Lady Eagles post a 320 to seal the championship.
That consistency is what separates Argyle from the field.
Wert’s 75-75 finish earns third individually, while Purczynski’s 77-78 places her seventh. Rendon’s 80-82 gives the Lady Eagles another top-20 finish, and Moses and Edwards both improve in the final round to help lock down the team title. It is a complete lineup effort, the kind required to win in April against the best teams in Region I.
And that is what makes the performance stand out.
Argyle does not back into a regional title. The Lady Eagles lead after day one, return with an even better second round, and finish the job with balanced scoring and poise under pressure. On one of the state’s premier golf courses, against one of the strongest regional fields in Texas, Argyle proves it is ready for the next stage.
Now the focus turns to Georgetown.
With a regional championship in hand, the Lady Eagles advance to the UIL 5A State Tournament at White Wing Golf Club, where they will chase the next great moment in a season already filled with them.
