Championship teams are remembered not only for winning, but for how they respond when the pressure tightens.

Argyle’s 2021-22 Lady Eagles answered that moment like champions.

At the UIL 4A Girls State Tournament, Argyle surged past the field with a brilliant final-round push, carding a tournament-best 303 on Day 2 to secure the team state championship with a 36-hole total of 620. After opening with a 317 and trailing Midlothian Heritage by two shots after the first round, the Lady Eagles flipped the tournament on its head with one of the strongest closing rounds of the event. They turned a narrow deficit into a commanding 16-shot victory.

Midlothian Heritage finished second at 636, while Andrews placed third at 658.

The title was built on balance, toughness, and a lineup that delivered throughout the week.

Claire Jensen led the way for Argyle with rounds of 74 and 79 for a 153, finishing sixth individually. Madison Wert followed with one of the most important rounds of the tournament, bouncing back from an opening 82 with a closing 72 to finish seventh at 154. Katie Garner added a 155 on rounds of 80 and 75, while Ryan Purczynski posted 81 and 77 for a 158. Lauren Justice rounded out the championship lineup with scores of 86 and 87.

That depth proved to be the difference.

Argyle placed four players inside the top 12 individually, and when the final round arrived, the Lady Eagles separated from the field with poise and precision. Madison Wert’s closing 72 stood out as one of the best rounds of the day. At the same time, Garner and Purczynski both improved in the final round, and Jensen gave Argyle a steady presence near the top of the leaderboard from the opening round forward.

The team’s second-day 303 was the lowest round posted by any team in the tournament and was the round that ultimately delivered the state title.

The individual race was every bit as competitive as the team battle. Alexandra Hileman of Sunnyvale claimed medalist honors at 144, while Midlothian Heritage’s Maddie Sanders finished second at 148 after winning a playoff for runner-up honors over Hondo’s Mallory Matthews. Even in that kind of field, Argyle’s lineup consistently stayed in the mix and gave itself multiple scoring chances across both days.

For the Lady Eagles, this championship was the result of more than one strong round. It was the product of a complete team effort.

Argyle did not win the tournament with one player carrying the load. The Lady Eagles won it the way the best teams often do — with depth, with resilience, and with a closing round that left no doubt.

By the end of the tournament, the scoreboard told the story clearly: Argyle on top, state champions again, and a team performance worthy of the moment.
