Lady Eagles Rally to Capture UIL 4A State Championship
May 16-17, 2022
Legends Golf Course at LBJ – Kingsland, Texas
Championship teams are remembered not only for winning, but also for how they respond when the pressure tightens.
Argyle’s 2021-22 Lady Eagles answer that moment like champions.
At the UIL 4A Girls State Tournament, Argyle storms past the field with a brilliant final-round push, firing a tournament-best 303 on day two to capture the team state championship with a 36-hole total of 620. After opening with a 317 and trailing Midlothian Heritage by two shots after the first round, the Lady Eagles flip the tournament with one of the strongest closing rounds of the event and turn a narrow deficit into a commanding 16-shot victory.
Midlothian Heritage finishes second at 636, while Andrews places third at 658.
The title is built on balance, toughness, and a lineup that delivers from top to bottom.
Claire Jensen leads the way for Argyle with rounds of 74 and 79 for a 153, finishing sixth individually. Madison Wert follows with one of the defining rounds of the tournament, bouncing back from an opening 82 with a closing 72 to finish seventh at 154. Katie Garner adds a 155 on rounds of 80 and 75, while Ryan Purczynski posts 81 and 77 for a 158. Lauren Justice rounds out the championship lineup with scores of 86 and 87.
That depth becomes the difference.
Argyle places four players inside the top 12 individually, and when the final round arrives, the Lady Eagles separate from the field with poise and precision. Wert’s closing 72 stands out as one of the best rounds of the day, while Garner and Purczynski both improve in the final round, and Jensen gives Argyle a steady presence near the top of the leaderboard from the opening round forward.
The team’s second-day 303 is the lowest round posted by any team in the tournament, and it is the round that ultimately delivers the state title.
The individual race is every bit as competitive as the team battle. Alexandra Hileman of Sunnyvale claims medalist honors at 144, while Midlothian Heritage’s Maddie Sanders finishes second at 148 after winning a playoff over Hondo’s Mallory Matthews. Even in that kind of field, Argyle’s lineup stays in contention and gives itself multiple scoring chances across both days.
For the Lady Eagles, this championship is the result of more than one great round. It is the product of a complete team effort.
Argyle does not win the tournament with one player carrying the load. The Lady Eagles win it the way the best teams often do — with depth, with resilience, and with a closing round that leaves no doubt.
By the end of the tournament, the scoreboard tells the story clearly: Argyle on top, state champions, and a team performance worthy of the moment.
COMPETE WITH JOY
