No. 5 Argyle 25, Mansfield Summit 20
The Eagles scored a late go-ahead touchdown and held off Mansfield Summit’s rally attempt to win the battle between District 3-5A DII’s last two unbeaten teams.
Argyle (6-1, 5-0), ranked No. 5 in the state in all of 5A Division II, went up 25-20 with 3:16 to play on UTSA commit Maguire Gasperson’s 1-yard touchdown run, followed by a failed 2-point conversion attempt.
Summit (5-2, 4-1) then drove as far as the Guyer 30-yard line before its final pass attempts for a potential winning score were unsuccessful.
Argyle cleared one of the last major hurdles in the quest for its 16th district championship over the last 17 seasons with the victory. The Eagles are now 90-1 across their last 91 district games and have won 29 straight in district play.
Gasperson led the way for Argyle at 20 of 23 for 222 yards alongside his lone scoring run. Julian Caldwell caught nine passes for 140 yards as his top target. Nathaniel Bruce tallied 14 carries for 80 yards and two touchdowns alongside 11 carries for 48 yards and one score from Logan Rexroat.
