ARLINGTON — Once every dozen seasons or so Argyle loses a football game in district play.

But not on Thursday night. The current streak is alive and well at 29 after a 41-24 victory over Arlington Seguin at Arlington ISD’s newest stadium, Glaspie Field, on the campus of Martin High.

Argyle (6-1, 4-0 in District 3-5A Division II), a state semifinalist a year ago, is No. 5 in The Associated Press’ 5A-DI state ranking and No. 6 in The Dallas Morning News’ 5A area poll.

Over the last 17 seasons, Todd Rodgers’ Argyle teams have won 90 of 91 league games, the lone defeat coming to Melissa 21-0 in the 2021 district opener, snapping an Argyle stretch of 61 consecutive district wins dating to 2009.

“We don’t talk about that streak,” said Argyle running back Nathaniel Bruce, who rushed for 163 yards on 13 carries, his fourth 100-yard game of the season. “I didn’t realize the number was that big.”

Rodgers said the streak is great, but he doesn’t make a point of bringing it up to his players.

“For us it is all about day-to-day preparation,” the coach said.

Seguin (5-2, 3-2), No. 11 in the The News’ 5A area poll, remains in contention for its second consecutive playoff berth despite suffering its second consecutive defeat. The Cougars started the season 5-0 before falling to Mansfield Timberview 30-23 last week and again showed determination with a late comeback.

Argyle pulled away with two touchdown drives in the third quarter, turning a 12-point halftime cushion to 25 with Argyle quarterback Maguire Gasperson, orally committed to UTSA, finishing off drives with short touchdown runs.

Gasperson finished his night nine seconds into the fourth quarter with a 2-yard scoring pass to Braden Bach.

Early in the game, Argyle had difficulty moving the ball.

“Seguin had a different defense scheme than we expected and then we adjusted,” Bruce explained.

Seguin rallied with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns separated by 72 seconds. Quarterback Chevy Andrews, operating well in the hurry-up attack, ran 3 yards for a touchdown and connected with Johnaven Polk on a 24-yard score. An interception by Michael Jackson and an onside kick recovery set up the scores.

Argyle safety Landon Howard ended Seguin’s comeback with his interception with three minutes remaining.

Seguin opened the game with a 90-yard, 15-play touchdown drive that consumed eight minutes of the game clock, ending on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Andrews to G’Manii Smith for a 6-0 lead.

Argyle took a 7-6 lead on a 25-yard touchdown connection from Gasperson to highly recruited junior Julian Caldwell who broke a tackle on his way to the end zone.

The Eagles widened the lead to 14-6 in the final four minutes of the first half with a four-play drive of 81 yards, all runs. Obadiah Goble accounted for the final 11 yards.

The lead grew to 21-6 when Bruce raced 57 yards on a draw play.

Just before intermission, Seguin’s hurry-up attack produced a 28-yard Oscar Lopez field goal.

Argyle won the first-ever meeting of the schools a year ago 36-7.
